︎ @DEVDHUNSIWorking at the intersection of photography, textile, installation and critical myth-making, Dev Dhunsi’s practice expands the photographic image into sculptural, sonic and ecological space. Dhunsi combines photographic and textile techniques to investigate how histories are carried, obscured and reconfigured through material, memory and vision. Images are stretched across fabric, submerged in water or set into motion, transforming photography from a static document into an embodied, multisensory experience. Drawing on personal archives, ancestral narratives and diasporic dislocations shaped by his upbringing between Trondheim and Punjab, his work creates space for overlooked or silenced stories, resisting linear time and singular authorship. Blending myth, documentary traces and speculative gestures, Dhunsi’s installations foreground identity as porous and relational, shaped by cultural, political and historical forces. His work frequently engages queer South Asian mythologies alongside blurred landscapes that interrogate colonial frameworks of land, belonging and visibility.

Photographs printed on linen, tapestry and archival fragments unfold in the exhibition space. Exploring the intersection of language and identity, Dhunsi’s project stems from the question: what happens when language fails to name lived experience? Starting out from a reflection on the absence of a word in Norwegian to describe “mixed” without reproducing ideas of race, Dhunsi here approaches identity as a shifting, porous process, in contrast to the idea of a fixed category. Fluidity holds in different aspects a crucial part in Dhunsi’s work - both in his visual language, the materials used and the subjects his lens-based practice depicts. Blurred, colour-inverted or partially concealed the subjects in his photographs are never fully revealed to the viewer, instead they enter a place where metaphor, symbols and mythology intertwines.
In his practice, Dhunsi considers the authoritarian, historical aspects of depiction as a way of controlling narratives, as well as the subjects and environments depicted. In the exhibition room, archival images from the former State Institute for Racial Biology in Uppsala, Sweden, emerge from the floor. Partly visible, yet still concealed, they serve as historical traces and as reminders of how classification, visibility and violence are inscribed in the history of both images and institutions. This visual representation is a stark contrast to his own method, where the images grew out of conversations he had with the people depicted, leaning into a lack of direction and allowing for the subject’s own preference of self-representation.

Mixed is a vivid and inquisitive exploration of identity by Norwegian artist Dev Dhunsi, whose mixed heritage forms the book’s point of departure. In Norway, where no equivalent word for ‘mixed’ exists, Dhunsi uses photography and text to give form to experiences that language has yet to name, confronting how belonging, visibility, and love are shaped by race, gender, and desire.

Composed of photographs, archival fragments, and text, the book unfolds as a hybrid work where tenderness and defiance, intimacy and displacement coexist. Through layering and juxtaposition, it presents a complex vision of identity that is both personal and collective, transforming hybridity from conflict into creation.

Across these pages, Dhunsi builds an experimental, mythical world – a space where bodies, symbols, and words blur and reform. Mixed sketches out a space for new kinds of humans to exist: fluid, plural, and free.

Mixed was made possible by the Nordic Photobook Award, presented by Fotogalleriet Oslo.

		<description>
Podium and K4 Oslo proudly presents the following artists at SWAB art fair 2025; Thyra Dragseth (b. 1993, Copenhagen), Dev Dhunsi (b. 1996) and Louise Herreira Evensen (b. 1993, Stockholm). The presentation is curated by Hedda Grevle Ottesen (b. 1989, Oslo)Glimpses Behind the Curtain offers a rare and intimate preview of Dev Dhunsi’s forthcoming project, set to launch as a photobook and international exhibitions in 2026. Drawn from the margins of the editing process, these outtakes reveal fragments that hover between inclusion and omission, images that carry the
pulse of the work without settling into its final form.
In negatives, and bodies dissolving into light, the photographs echo the projects’ central concerns: the legacies of racial classification, the instability of identity, and the poetic charge of hybridity. They are less finished statements than fugitive gestures, moments that refuse to resolve yet insist on being seen.
By stepping momentarily “behind the curtain,” viewers encounter the vulnerability of process itself — a reminder that identity, like the photograph, is always provisional, shifting, and unfinished.

Dev Dhunsi’s installation, This much I have left, 2025, combines imagery recalling a childhood
game played with his sister with aspects of his family history. In the game, stones cupped in
palms are repeatedly flipped up in the air, though some are lost each time while catching them.
This gesture of slippage serves as a metaphor for what is kept versus forgotten within the fluid
realm of identity and memory. Circular vignettes of his sister’s hands float upon a “sea” wherein
each of the island tableaus gradually diminish as fewer stones remain. Fragments from a
painting by Dhunsi’s father, an artist, and a carpet woven by his grandmother, a traditional
artisan, are immersed in water. The carpet was brought from India to Norway by his father, a
souvenir of the family’s artmaking spanning generations. These intertwined layers – conceptual,
visual, and narrative – merge together, while suffused with meaning. Remnants stirring rhythms
of thought, migration, and the uncertainty of inheritance. Memories, that like water, are filtered,
floating, difficult to hold.
